Rays OF Carl Crawford knew what to expect before his team played the Yankees on Thursday night: A crowd of New York writers were waiting to talk to him about the possibility he'll become one of the most appealing free agents in baseball after the 2010 season. "They say it's going to be like that," Crawford said. "It comes with the territory. You've got to answer those questions and I'm fine with that." The Rays and Crawford are not expected to resume contract negotiations until after the season, which is already causing speculation about the Yankees making a serious bid should the three-time AL All-Star opt for free agency. "My mind is still, I'm a Tampa Bay Ray," Crawford said. "I don't even think past this year. I don't really want my mind to think that far. According to MLB.com, Rockies CF Dexter Fowler is finding his niche at the major-league level. "I think it's just being more comfortable -- more games, more at-bats," Fowler said. Hitting coach Don Baylor added that Fowler's general knowledge has increased. "There's a tremendous difference," Baylor said. "At the plate, it seems like he's more confident. There was a time last year where balls away, he didn't know whether they were balls or strikes. But he's learned the strike zone." That eye in the batter's box can be attributed to the work Fowler did in the offseason in Georgia. "It's a matter of more at-bats, seeing more pitches, getting more at-bats, figuring out some things I can and can't do before the season starts," he said. "The more pitches I'm seeing, the better at-bats I'm going to have."

According to MLB.com, Nationals SP Scott Olsen threw a four-inning, minor-league intrasquad game on Thursday. Olsen, who allowed one unearned run, had his fastball clocked at 86 mph. It's hard to get up for days like today. But there is no pain, so I feel good where I'm at."

"He looked good again," pitching coach Steve McCatty said about Wang on Thursday. "He was free and easy. There were no problems and that's what you want the session to be -- keep the ball down. To the point of where he is at, the velocity is fine. The motion was free and clean." Wang threw his first bullpen session on Monday, but he is not expected to be ready until sometime in May. The Nationals plan for him to throw another bullpen session Friday.

MLB.com reports Cubs SP Ted Lilly (shoulder) threw to hitters for the first time on Thursday and could be ready for the rotation by mid-April. "I feel pretty darn good," Lilly said. "The most important thing is when you get up there on the mound. I haven't thrown any breaking balls. It's a different deal when you're throwing bullpens or even [batting practice] as opposed to getting in a game and working out of a jam. The intensity goes up quite a bit [in a game]." Duncan also said, "He's got a two-seam fastball. He's got a four-seam fastball. He's got a nice little changeup. He's got an inconsistent breaking ball. I'd like to see his breaking ball improve. According to MLB.com, St. Louis SP Mitchell Boggs is working on a more consistent delivery because of his early struggles in spring training. It's got everything to do with execution." Pitching coach Dave Duncan expressed his concern with the delivery. As reported earlier in the week, the Diamondbacks officially signed 3B Mark Reynolds to a three-year contract Thursday. The deal runs through 2012 and includes a club option for 2013. Last year, Reynolds hit 44 home runs and had 102 RBI, both career highs. His one-year home run total is the second highest in Diamondbacks history behind Luis Gonzalez (57 in 2001), and he will be counted on to continue to power Arizona's lineup. "He is one of the premier power hitters in the game," general manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement. Reynolds stole 24 bases last year to become just the fourth major league player in the decade to hit 40 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season. Alex Rodriguez (2005, '07), Alfonso Soriano (2006) and Shawn Green (2001) were the others. Reynolds went 2 for 2 Thursday at the Athletics, hitting his second spring homer.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel named Alex Cora his interim starter at shortstop on Thursday, but he's still hoping Jose B. Reyes returns from his thyroid issue in time to be ready for the start of the season. Then again, that window is quickly closing with just over two weeks left in spring training. Reyes was told to rest until his thyroid levels return to normal, and the prognosis was that it would take 2-8 weeks. Manuel estimated last week Reyes would need to play in 10 exhibition games to be prepared for the season. "I am still holding out," Manuel said. "I am still believing he will show up here in parking lot No. 7 any day."

When news about Jose B. "If you happen to take a young player you'd have to ... find the right spots you think the guy would have a chance to have success, and after that comes confidence and after that you let him go," Manuel said. Considered the organization's best defensive infielder prospect, Tejada is an "interesting player" to Manuel, and the manager said he would still consider him an option to make the team. "He has some tremendous instincts to play," Manuel said. "I like him a lot."

Braves SP Tommy Hanson is feeling closer to being ready for opening day, according to MLB.com. "I definitely feel like I'm really close," Hanson said. Today was definitely a confidence booster, and I feel like I'm getting closer and closer. I definitely don't feel like I'm far off from where I need to be at the start of the season." Part of the reason he is feeling so confident is because he feels his changeup is the best he has ever thrown it. Following a 4-2 win over the Marlins on Wednesday that saw him give up one run and six hits in five innings, Hanson said, "I think that's the best I've thrown my changeup ever. With Mets shortstop Jose B. Reyes likely out for the start of the season because of an overactive thyroid, veteran infielder Alex Cora likely will start the season in his place, with 20-year-old prospect Ruben Tejada a possibility to back him up, manager Jerry Manuel said Thursday. The 34-year-old Cora has 12 years of major-league experience, including extensive time last year when injuries made him a necessity, though he also battled thumb injuries much of the season. "People are talking about age and that I've slowed down defensively," Cora said. "There is some statistical analysis out there that says I am losing my range. I will just try to work on a few things, but if that's something I can improve, I will just keep working on it. Let's put it this way: I have been in the big leagues for 12 years, and it's not because I hit .300."

Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez, who missed Wednesday's game with sore quadriceps, returned to the lineup Thursday at the Mariners. He went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI, raising his spring batting average to .370 (10 for 27). He feels at ease in spring training, not stressing about his role. For once, he can hone his swing in peace, without the eyes of coaches assessing his every at-bat, figuring out whether he belongs at this level or needs more seasoning in the minors. He will be penciled into the starting spot in left field come opening day in Milwaukee. And that's a burden off his mind. "It's the first time I've come here for spring training with a little bit of plans," the 24-year-old Gonzalez said. "I know where I am, where I am going to be. It's a really good feeling." Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz pitched four scorelss innings in a minor league game on Thursday, Boston's only scheduled off day of the spring. It was Buchholz's regular day to start and the team wanted to keep him on schedule. Buchholz gave up one hit and struck out four while walking none. "I tried to take it as the same outing as if I was pitching against Tampa Bay or New York or whoever," Buchholz said. "Sometimes it's good to come out here and pitch. But I felt really good physically. Got to use all my pitches. Got through four innings, and got some work in. That's basically the main reason why I threw today - stay on five days' and get the work on." Buchholz used all his pitches and was satisfied with them all. "For the most part, I felt good with all of them," he said. "I was able to find out what I was doing wrong, and switch it in between a pitch instead of it being three or four pitches away. Missed a couple fastballs and felt good when I came back and adjusted. And same thing with a couple of curveballs and changeups. And even the cutter. They all worked at one point in time. So, that builds confidence."
