TransCanada Corp., owner of Canada's largest pipeline system,
has received approval to expand the Canadian portion of its Keystone
pipeline to bring crude from Alberta's oil sands to refineries in
the U.S. Gulf Coast. The National Energy Board announced the
approval with 22 conditions. The 3,185-kilometre Keystone XL project
extends the Calgary-based company's existing Keystone pipeline,
which runs through Canada to the central United States and will
begin operating this year. "Keystone will be the first pipeline to
directly connect a growing and reliable supply of Canadian crude oil
to the largest refining market in North America," Hal Kvisle,
TransCanada chief executive, said in a statement.
